These relaxation techniques will help you find ways to soothe yourself when going through a stressful time.

We all go through stressful times in our lives. Some of us may seek out ways to help ourselves manage stress. When it comes to self-care, striving for calmness and relaxation is the key to maintaining proper mental health. These relaxation techniques will help you find ways to soothe yourself when going through a stressful time.

Breathing With Intention

Focusing your attention inward, rather than outward is the first step toward relaxation. Let your heart rate slow down as you take long, slow, controlled breaths. Allow your mind to disengage from whatever stressful situation you may be in, and let your deep breaths calm you down and regulate your heartbeat. Mindful breathing has proven to be very helpful for people with eating disorders, as it allows them to feel more connected to their bodies in a positive way.

Tune Into Your Body

Body scans are another great way to relax your mind. As your breath with focus and intention, focus on one body part at a time, letting your mind focus on your body rather than what is triggering your stress. Physical tension and mental stress are very closely related, so you should also consider physical therapy and massages to relax your muscles. This will help boost your awareness of the connection that your mind and body share.

Let Your Imagination Help

Once you’ve let your deep breathing set it, it is helpful to close your eyes and imagine peaceful images. Whether they’re images of places you’ve been or people you know or events you’d like to experience, let those images take over your mind and calm you down.

Mindful Meditation Practice

Meditation can take many forms, but for stress, the best kind of meditation is the traditional kind. With traditional meditation practices, you allow yourself to sit comfortably, focus on your breath, and be present in the moment. Your mind shouldn’t wander to negative thoughts. You should simply be thinking about your current place and time.

Peaceful Prayer Time

Many people who suffer from severe stress also find that prayer is extremely helpful. For stress, you should repeat a short prayer over and over again to let your mind disengage from negative thoughts. The repetition will calm you until you’ve reached your maximum state of relaxation.
